Jamaica contains some of the largest known deposits of bauxite in the world. The mining areas are located in the western and central parts of the island. After mining, most of the bauxite is carried to alumina plants where it is refined into alumina. The alumina (or in some cases unrefined bauxite) is carried to export ports by rail.
Because of Jamaica’s low-silica high-quality bauxite, it is well suited for global alumina and cement industries. Aluminum production starts with the strip mining of the raw material bauxite, which is a clay-like soil found near the equator.
In 2001 Alcan sold its bauxite mining and alumina plants in Jamaica but kept responsibility for many of the bauxite residue sites with the intention of safely remediating them to an agreed standard and transferring ownership to the Government of Jamaica. The agreed objective was maximum biodiversity rather than housing or agricultural use.
